For Centuries Newcastle was valued as a Northern boundary outpost, first for the Roman Empire and later for the English Monarchy.
The two Empires intersected at the West Gate where the lines of the City Wall and Hadrian's Wall cross.
Newcastle Arts Centre is built on a Roman Milecastle, and Assembly House was once a Mansion House from where the King's appointee ruled Newcastle. In the 18th century it was decorated in a Roman style in homage to the Georgian Monarchy.
